Scenes from Auckland

A couple of weekends ago I took Daniel and Elizabeth to a farm west of Auckland. They had a lovely time, patting and feeding animals. I took some photos which I’ve been meaning to share. Elizabeth loves feeding animals, even sticking her fingers into their mouths on occasion.

Daniel likes feeding animals too and inadvertently fed a goat his plastic bag containing animal feed. The goat ate the whole thing!

Auckland really gets me down. A lot. I have to drive everywhere and I hate driving and there’s so much man-made ugliness here. Some scenes from Auckland:

At least there’s a pedestrian path through this carpark:

This last street is surely one of Victor Gruen‘s avenues of horror. The places themselves are just as uninspiring as my photos.

Lovely photos of the children. As to the Auckland scenes, could also be Brisbane. Ugly suburbia is everywhere!

I must admit I never particularly liked Brisbane either! I’ve been spoilt by having the opportunity to live in some beautiful places.

I agree with Eve on both the kids and the suberbs. Daniel loves patting animals.

They both love animals which is nice. Lots of kids are terrified of them.

I agree that Auckland is not a great place to live and I never wanted to live there, but everything is relative. Suva is a very walkable city, but the first time I went there the only department store in town had burned to the ground the previous weekend. Instead of a beach it has mud flats. The climate is worse than Brisbane, and the place is also prone to military insurrections.
On the other hand, Daniel and Elizabeth would love it because there are lots of wild mongooses (in my opinion the second cutest animals after meerkats). They were introduced to kill native snakes. I believe they can be tamed.

Sometimes visions of perfect make ordinary seem unbearable, but every silver lining has a cloud.

I had to look up where Suva is. I’d *never* go to Fiji. Not even for a holiday. Tropical islands are just not my idea of a holiday and certainly not one that sits above the most active seismic geology on Earth.

Everything is relative. If I’d only ever lived in Auckland, then I’d probably think it was a nice place. But I’ve known better…

No place is perfect. But when you like a place, it’s easier to overlook its imperfections.
