We visited Karekare beach yesterday, a wild and windy beach on the west coast with black sand and lush forest right up to the shore line. Karekare beach is famous for having provided a location for the film The Piano:

I love the west coast. The drive through the Waitakere Ranges is always very pleasant with views to die for and thick vegetation; there seems to be less traffic on the western side of Auckland than on the Eastern side. Also, the Waitakere Ranges are made of extinct volcanoes which is very reassuring and unlike the East’s simmering pot of magma. Perhaps I also feel just a little bit closer to Australia on the west.

It was a lovely overcast, coolish day. Why people love visiting the beach on a hot and sunny day is a mystery to me. Cool and overcast is perfect for the outdoors. Hot and sunny = day indoors.
