More of Freud

Freud is looking much better today and is home now. Another ultrasound yesterday revealed the likely bleed in his abdomen had got smaller and was improving, and with it are all his symptoms. All the tests he’s had however have shown that Freud has every disease known to man plus a few more, but so far he is yet to show any clinical signs of them. So the vet has him on a cocktail of drugs which should extend his life and even perk him up a bit, not that I think he needed any perking up. With Freud on a daily selection of pills and Zeki still on steroids, it feels like we’re running an animal hospital. Freud is also on a low-fat diet for his pancreatitis which he is not happy about.

Our cat, Ivan, became very expensive in the last days of his life after he was attacked by a dog. He never really recovered and there were several expensive visits to the vet over the course of 3 weeks before he died. When I was a kid this did not happen. If a pet was in severe pain or in debilitated health, it would be taken out to the back yard and given some really choice treat to eat. While it was chewing away as best it could, out would come Betsy, the .22 rifle, placing a carefully aimed bullet through the back of the animal's head into its brain. There's a discussion to be had about quality of life versus longevity – for people, as well as pets.Looking back, I think we extended our cat's life for us, rather than for him. But there was no way of telling what he would have preferred.
