Titirangi

We only have the hire car for a few more days so I thought I’d take the opportunity to look at some houses and areas in and around Auckland this weekend. We went to one open home and it was a lovely place….for storing shoes. A bit cramped for a house though. Afterwards I took the kids for a drive out to Titirangi. I have long wanted to visit this part of Auckland and it exceeded all my expectations. A winding, undulating road through lush forests with fabulous harbour views culminating in a very cute village with everything you need: shops, cafes, restaurants, bookstore, library, kindergarten, galleries and even its very own theatre. There was also a market full of gorgeous crafty things. I could have spent hours looking except that I didn’t want to bore Daniel and Elizabeth to tears. They were very good and seemed to enjoy the outing as much as me.

I have a lot of respect for single parents. It has been just the three of us since Ben left last Thursday and it is not easy and I’m only part-time single mum. How do they manage full-time?

    Sounds lovely Rachel. Is it expensive to buy a home there? As for single mums of 3 – well, from a bit of experience here (!), the good thing is it does get easier over the years (all 14 of them). My 'baby' boy is nearly 21 now and my 'baby' girl nearly 15. I would just take them to every free place going – just like you do – beaches, museums, playgrounds, rivers, walking, watching roadworks, at the back of the airport (well one of mine is a pilot now…), and, on a lucky feeling rich day – shops!     Definitely affordable at Titirangi but quite far from the CBD. I've just found a great playgroup that runs three days per week which should help to keep me sane.

    Just as well you didn't. marry a soldier, sailor, pilot, country doctor, travelling salesman, politician or any one of those types who travel constantly with their jobs, Rachel. Must be tough for their wives and families. At least you won't be a single mum for too much longer.
