Too Anxious for Counselling

I read recently that a three-year-old boy was receiving counselling for the September quake in the CTV building when the February quake struck and the building collapsed. Miraculously, the boy, his 11-month-old sister and their mother, all survived. I imagine he’ll now need counselling for the counselling.

A week before the February quake I asked my own doctor for a referral to someone in order to help me deal with the September quake. He didn’t give me one. Imagine if he’d referred me to a counsellor in the CTV building as well. I like to think that I’d have chosen not to go inside given my fear at the time.

Daniel was referred to a psychiatrist late last year for anxiety issues unrelated to the quake. He was due to see someone not long after February 22nd on the ground floor of the hospital. There was no way I was going to take the kids in there so I was forced to phone the hospital and explain that my son was not going to keep his appointment to discuss his anxiety because his mother was too anxious to go inside the hospital.
