Falkland

Falkland is an historic village in Fife, Scotland, about an hour’s drive north from Edinburgh. A friend recommended it to us recently as a good place to visit and we were not disappointed. It’s just delightful.

Falkland has found fame recently as a film location from the TV series, Outlander. Here’s my Outlander photo which, if you’ve seen the show, will look familiar.

And with the family now.

Falkland was lucky to have been relatively poor in the 1960s when old homes and buildings in prosperous towns and villages were replaced with new ugly ones. Now Falkland has all the old heritage preserved thanks to this poverty which has turned it into a tourist destination and filming location. Every direction you look is full of character, history, and art.

There’s a palace in Falkland – Falkland Palace – but it’s closed over the winter so we only got to see the outside of it. Here’s a pic:

I found a wonderful vintage clothes shop called Vintage Quine. Quine means girl in Doric.

Much to my family’s dismay I spent far too much time in this shop but did come away with a gorgeous 1940s knitted gown.
