Edinburgh

We’ve had a great day in Edinburgh today. First stop this morning was Laid Back Bikes where I got to try out an Urban Arrow. This is one slick bike. It weighs and handles similarly to the bakfiets but has electric assist and so is easy peasy to pedal. I’m in two minds about having electric assist; I’d like the option but I’m worried I’ll get lazy and lose my thighs of steel. I was mostly interested to see whether the kids could fit inside and whether there’s growing room for them since I’m expecting to be using a cargo bike for some years yet. The rain cover went over Daniel’s head but only just. He’ll probably be too tall for it in a year or two.

As the kids were climbing out Elizabeth said in her loudest voice, “Daniel wiped his snot inย the bike”.

We need to pay off all the plumbing bills before thinking about a new bike again but it was good to try this one out while we’re here. I was impressed with all the cycling infrastructure I saw in Edinburgh, too; itย looks to be much better than in Aberdeen.

Then we went for lunch at a vegetarian/vegan cafe. There aren’t any exclusively vegetarian cafes in Aberdeen so this was a novelty for me. Daniel, however, was not impressed and shouted out loudly when we first walked in, “I want meat”. He doesn’t get to eat meat at home but I let him eat whatever he wants when we go out and he’s definitely a carnivore. I don’t think I’ll ever convince Daniel to go veggie.

After lunch we went to Dynamic Earth, a science attraction featuring a simulation of time travel back through the history of the universe and theย Earth. There was a volcanic eruption, 3D flight, rainforest exhibit, an iceberg and lots of other things. Both kids absolutely loved it. Daniel in particular was mesmerised the entire time. Elizabeth was a little scared, especially during the volcanic eruption, but she still had a great time.

It has been nice wandering around this beautiful city. Edinburgh has a great vibe and I’ve enjoyed coming here again. We visited the castle on our last visit andย so we don’t plan to do it again this time but I took this photo of it towering over the city streets:

We also wandered passed this little garden which was created in 1910 as a place for children living in nearby slums to play.

      It is! I completely agree.

Sounds like you had some fun which is excellent. And no doubt Daniel will surprise you one day by declaring himself meat free while at the same time berating you for not insisting his diet was green only! At least that’s my experience of the parenting lottery.

I hope you’re right but I have my doubts. Daniel said to me to today, “If we shave some ham off a pig will it grow back?”

Edinburgh is a lovely city ๐Ÿ™‚ Sounds like just the sort of day you needed after all your plumbing and BT woes.

Yep, it’s definitely just what I needed. I’m particularly pleased to get away from our kitchen which has holes in the floor.

Brilliant place, the museum is fantastic and the Museum of Childhood, I think there’s a site called Edinburgh for free that lists some great places to visit. Some fabby veggie restaurants too, The mosque cafe does great well priced curries as well.

We’re heading back to Aberdeen tomorrow afternoon but we’ve definitely got time to do some sight seeing first.

Hope you will have enough saving to get that Urban Arrow real soon.

Glad to know you had good weekend in Edinburgh.

The Urban Arrow was your favourite, wasn’t it? I don’t think we will get that one just because it’ll be too small for the kids in a year or so and it’s a lot of money to spend just for one year of use. I’ve got my eyes on this bike now:

Yeah I instantly liked UA. Although right now, I can only dream about bikes and cycling.

Triobike looks cool too. Go for it. It looks cooler than that bullet or whatever bike you considered at that time.

Rachel, Rachel, Rachel … You don’t need a power assisted bike. Put more steel in those thighs. You’ll be glad you did.

Yes, I’m beginning to think you’re right. I think I’ll go for a lighter bike instead. I’ve found one that’s 10kg lighter than the bakfiets.

Edinburgh’s cycling infrastructure is improving, slowly. From my experience of Aberdeen, it certainly is better! Lots of old railway lines are cyclepaths, allowing traffic-free cycling around the edge of the city centre. But as the Innertube map shows, all these routes don’t connect very well, and I think that’s something all the various cycling groups are working hard on lobbying to the Council about.

The only negative I suppose is that Edinburgh is very hilly which makes cycling hard, especially on my bike. This makes Aberdeen’s infrastructure all the more disappointing since it’s a fairly flat city and perfect for cycling and yet there’s very little infrastructure there.

I wonder if we all have different bodies. I find myself craving fish and seafood if I’ve been without for a while, and Isabel is an “I want chicken” and “I want ham” sort of a girl, she’s not so bothered about any other meat.
It will be interesting to see Daniel grow in the next few years. Is he quite tall compared with the other children in his class?

    1. Rachel M Avatar

I crave chocolate, lentils, and chick peas. Daniel is quite tall and he eats non-stop. I don’t know where he puts it all because he’s so skinny.

I think you are quite tall, is that right? So I think you are right to foresee him growing out of the top of the bike soon. I always feel envious that tall people can eat more – you have to be careful when you are only 5 2.

We went to an Indian buffet for lunch yesterday and I was so happy to have lentils and chick peas, and Isabel could have all the chicken and potatoes she wanted. Rhiannon just likes food with a “mushy” consistency so she was happy too.

Indian restaurants are great. There’s always something to keep everyone happy. Indian and Thai are our favourites.
