The dentist and playing dress-ups

I took Elizabeth to the dentist this morning and everything is fine which is a big relief after the shock we had last year. We’ve found a terrific dentist here. He told me that what Elizabeth had done, with the stainless steel crowns on her back molars, is the best treatment she could possibly have had. But he also said that they don’t tend to do that here because people fear giving a general anaesthetic to a child. Instead they pull the teeth out altogether or put in white fillings which only need to be replaced again as these don’t work so well on baby teeth apparently. Pulling the teeth out is also not a good solution because it means when the back molars come in, the teeth next to it are absent and so theyย can grow upย crooked and push other teeth out of alignment. This particular dentist worked in the US for a while and he saidย stainless crowns are standard practice there. The Auckland dentist who treated Elizabeth was also American.

It would have been better hadย Elizabeth’s teeth not required any treatment at all and I can only recommend to all parents that they floss their child’s teeth from the moment they have teeth. We floss Elizabeth’s and Daniel’s teeth once a day now but we never used to. Never use the baby toothpaste as it doesn’t contain sufficient fluoride and never give your child fizzy drinks. We never did either of those two things anyway but plenty of parents do and it just isn’t worth it.

I usually take Thursdays off work and work on Saturdays instead. Today I was wandering around town and I went into a charity shop, as I often do, and found a lovely silk Monsoon dress for ยฃ10. I seem to be amassing a collection of dresses I don’t need and will probably never wear except for when I’m prancing about the house when no one else is home. I don’t think I’ve ever grown out of playing dress-ups. I’ve just spentย a good 10 minutes trying to photograph myself in this dress so I can post it to my blogย and thisย is the best I could do (yes, what a waste of my day off, I know, I know):

I managed to chop off the top of my head here but I think this pic shows the dress quite nicely (remember only ยฃ10, from Monsoon,ย silk,ย and I don’t think it has ever been worn) and at least you can’t see my frown lines ๐Ÿ™‚

Time to go and do something productive now.

My husband went to the dentist last Tuesday. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ While waiting for him, I wrote a poem about the dentist that I posted today. I do productive things sitting in the dentist office. ๐Ÿ™‚

You had a very productive trip to the dentist. I don’t think I’d ever feel motivated to write poetry in a dentist’s office.

It was either write poems or read outdated magazines.

Nice dress! Yes, fluoride is your friend. I think non-fluorided toothpaste was probably a factor in my children’s tooth decay too.

At least we’ve discovered these things while they’ve still got baby teeth. We live for a long time now and our teeth have to last and I think they contribute to our overall health so it’s good to look after them.

    Frown lines? Surely laughter lines?

      I’ve got those too ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

You should see my wardrobe. It’s full of dresses I never wear but can’t bring myself to part with ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

I love women in dresses. Don’t tell me you wear jeans most of the time.

No, I hardly ever wear jeans. I wear skirts almost everyday but dresses like the one in this post are too formal to wear day-to-day. I’ve got quite a few dresses like this, party dresses, but we have a boring life and never go anywhere that warrants wearing one ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

I am glad to hear that! Skirts are good too. You have young children. Life changes. I’m sure you don’t think it’s boring. ๐Ÿ™‚

You look stunning, lady! what catch for this price. Lets now hop you can use it too. Otherwise just keep posting and we surely will appreciate it so much, giving you so many views that you will end up being hired a s top model for a big fashion brand! How does that sound for a change! Lol

Oh you are too kind! I think the chance to waltz about my home in the dress and to share a pic on my blog is well-worth the ยฃ10 even if I never get to wear it out in public ๐Ÿ™‚

        It definitely is. Post more!

It’s a lovely dress – what a find! ๐Ÿ™‚ And I see nothing wrong in spending your time off any way that makes you happy! It is good to be yourself now and then – and not always a wife and/or mother.
I have never heard of stainless steel crowns! But agree, you need to keep the baby teeth so the permanent teeth are not crooked. My grown-up kids are lucky to have really good teeth, with maybe one filling. I did find out the fluoride content of our water and gave them fluoride tablets from when they were babies. Maybe this helped?

Yes, I think fluoride tablets are probably a good idea, especially in places where the tap water in not fluoridated. I’m not sure whether the water in Aberdeen is. I’ll have to check. Stainless steel crowns are just for baby teeth. It’s a stainless steel cap that covers the entire tooth.

And yes, it’s nice just to be yourself every now and again. I’ve certainly had a lovely day ๐Ÿ™‚

Lovely dress. You look lovely in it. Perhaps you should make Thursday your dress-up and going-out day. Put on a pretty dress, take yourself out or get someone to join you and enjoy lunch or arvo tea at a nice cafe.

Very interesting about American dentists. I had a lot of work done on my teeth, braces etcgrowing up in the UK, but all three of my kids have perfect, straight, unfilled teeth. I put it down to growing up in America where the water is flouridated, which it isn’t in the UK. It’s good that Elizabeth had her treatment before you moved. And I loved the dress, what an incredible bargain. You look amazing ๐Ÿ™‚
