A Christmas dinner in Keswick

One of the benefits of living in the UK is that I’m not the only Automattician in the country. Why is this good? Because it means I get to go to a work Christmas dinner and that’s exactly what I did last night. The dinner was in Keswick in the Lakes District, at a fabulous vegetarian restaurant. And no, I didn’t bully everyone into choosing a vegetarian restaurant, I had nothing to do with the choice of restaurant at all, honest. Obviously the people I work with realise you can have a good time and delicious food without having to eat meat. And a good time was indeed had by all.

My only complaint is that I wish I could have stayed longer. I booked an early train back to Aberdeen this morning so that I could get a lift back to the train station in Penrith and so I only got a brief glimpse of the main lake there, Derwentwater. But what I did see was very lovely and I’m sure I’ll go back.

I stayed in a really gorgeous B&B last night too. I think crime must be almost non-existent in Keswick because when I arrived there was no-one at the B&B and the front door was unlocked. Just inside were some envelopes with names of guests and instructions on where to find your room key and the number of your room. I got my key and went to my room – all the rooms were unlocked too – and I made myself at home. There was some sherry there and because I decided this was going to be my once every 3 months to have a beer night I drank all the sherry. Then I used one of the towels to freshen up a bit and a drank some water from one of the glasses. Feeling very happy by this stage and wanting to explore I left my room but couldn’t lock the door. My key didn’t work. It was then that I noticed the number on my key didn’t match the number on my door. I had gone into someone else’s room!!! Shit! I quickly found my room and did a crazy back-and-forth between the two of replacing the sherry I had drunk with the full glass in my room and swapping the hand towel I had used and then the clean glass as well. Then I removed all my stuff and made sure the room looked just as I had found it. Thank goodness I didn’t decide to jump in the jacuzzi before stepping out.

It was so great to meet some of the people I work with. One thing that can be difficult in our company is knowing who does what. If I want to report a bug one of the biggest hurdles is knowing who to report it to. Meeting people face-to-face and asking them, “What are you working on?” was tremendously useful. Much more so that I imagined.

The UKMatticians group is a very diverse bunch and we are from lots of different countries, not just Britain. I can’t speak highly enough of all the people I work with and the good food and company continued way past my bedtime and into the wee hours of the morning. I’m writing this now on the train back to Aberdeen which I’ve discovered has free wifi. The sun is annoying me by shining into my eyes but I’m enjoying watching the splendid Scottish countryside roll past and am looking forward to returning to my home, Aberdeen.

Now I know what an automattician is, a term I had not heard before. Glad the dinner went well. Veggie haggis?

Ah, yes. I should have provided an explanation for the word “Automattician”. It’s someone who works for Automattic

    Hi Rachel,

Yes, Keswick is really nice – if you go back make sure you visit the pencil museum, it’s more interesting than you may think.

I’ll be up in that part of world for Christmas as my in-laws live in Carlisle and we’re staying with them this next week.

I really like Carlisle too. I had to change trains in Carlisle and although I didn’t leave the station, I’ve been there before and the station itself is actually really lovely.

Oooh, maybe that’s where me and my husband can go next summer. We do want to go to the Lake District, possibly. Somewhere pretty with pubs, anyway. 🙂

It was definitely very pretty and had lots of pubs.

The whole Lake District is really beautiful (had my honeymoon there!) Sounds like you had a great visit – and I had to laugh at the “Wrong Number” 🙂 As you say – could have been worse. Imagine just stepping out of the shower as the “real” owner enters 😀
Loved the scenic photos too 🙂

Yes, exactly. How embarrassing would that have been!

It’s like something out of Goldilocks. Baby Bear said, “Who’s been drinking my sherry?”

Thanks goodness I wasn’t discovered asleep in their bed!

That gave me a laugh – thanks Rachel! Your work Christmas function sounded so enjoyable!

It was so great! Work functions are really fun and I’m so pleased I got to go on one. I’m going another another trip in early January so I’ll get to meet some more people then.

Sounds like a Fawlty Towers type evening!

Yes, except that it was one of the guests doing something idiotic rather than the staff at the hotel.

That is so funny about going into the wrong room. I’m pleased you didn’t do a Goldilocks but with the jacuzzi. Beautiful scenery in your photos. I hope you’ll treat us to photos of the Christmas dinner.

Thanks! I didn’t take any photos of the dinner which I really regret now. But a group photo was taken and I’ll post it to my blog as soon as I get a copy.

I’m glad you enjoyed it. Just as well you didn’t eat the porridge and get into bed. 🙂

Yes, my thoughts exactly! If they’d locked the doors to all the rooms it would never have happened. This is one of the pitfalls of living somewhere with no crime 🙂

Haha…oh Rachel, what a great image I have of you running back and forth with the sherry! Love it, as it’s just the sort of thing that would happen to me, I’m sure of it! What a gorgeous place, love your pics. Keswick is absolutely beautiful, a part of the world we hope to explore more of in this wonderful isle of ours. I’m singing off later today for Christmas, too much to do and know I won’t be able to keep up with the blogging, so wanted to wish you and your family a very Happy Christmas and New Year… and see you in 2015 🙂

Thanks so much Sherri! I really hope you have a lovely Christmas with your family too. Enjoy the break and see you in the New Year!

Your blogs make me wonder if Scotland is more beautiful than New Zealand 🙂

Haha, I’m not sure about that. I would say it beats the North Island hands down but probably not the South Island.

keswick is lovely & not very far from me – I was there yesterday – a nice place for your works get together

    1. Rachel M Avatar

Yeah, it was a great choice. We’re all over the UK and we wanted somewhere central but nice. The Lakes District seemed like a good choice and it was.

bring your hiking boots next year and we’ll do Skiddaw before you go home – there’s no better hangover cure 🙂
