Cousins and The Tepid Baths

Ben’s nieces, Frances and Jessica, came to visit us this week, all the way from Switzerland where they live. Daniel and Elizabeth both had a ball with Elizabeth particularly sad to see them go. Fortunately Frances is coming back to stay with us for a week at the end of the month, once they’ve finished travelling down south and before heading back to Switzerland.

The Auckland Tepid Baths have reopened and I took the children for a swim there this week. The Tepid Baths are an indoor heated swimming facility in central Auckland, originally built in 1914. The baths were closed in 2010 for extensive repairs to structural elements of the building. They reopened last month, after two years of repairs and renovations and lots of money spent. I can whole-heartedly say the place is terrific. The building is gorgeous and beautifully renovated with all the original features retained (as far as I can tell anyway) and a bit of modern luxury added, like hair dryers and straightening irons in the changing rooms. We’ll definitely go back.

Lovely photo, Rach, and I think there's a family resemblance there as well. I adore old fashioned swimming pools – we have some historic (and much smaller) baths here in Brisbane at Spring Hill. Where exactly in Auckland are they and is the water really "tepid'?

I had no idea Brisbane had some historic baths. We'll have to visit them on our next trip. The tepid baths are close to the waterfront at Viaduct Harbour. The temperatures are 31 for the learners' pool, 27 for the main pool and 39 for the spa.
