Nappies, Auckland and the beach

Elizabeth is completely toilet-trained. No nappies anymore, ever. Not even to bed. Daniel on the other hand wears the biggest, most-expensive night-time nappy which still fails to hold everything and he often wets his bed. How long will this go on for?

It’s always depressing coming back to Auckland after a trip away because it’s such a foul city. It’s soulless. A mish-mash of cars and motorways with no real heart.

I feel cold here despite the warmer climate and I think there are two reasons for this. Firstly, our house is cold. We have heating and we can afford to turn it on (unlike many other New Zealanders who live in substandard conditions) but it’s inadequate when the temperature outside gets really cold. It felt warmer in Christchurch because our house was warmer. There’s also something nice about being out and about when the temperature outside is zero. When the air is freezing, it doesn’t hold moisture anymore so it becomes dry and more pleasant to breathe. It never gets that cold here and so consequently always feels heavy and damp.

We took the children to the beach at Brown’s Bay yesterday afternoon and they had a lovely time with Elizabeth eating sand and Daniel writing his name in it. Got some good photos too.

Hi Rachel. Will try posting via Firefox rather than Chrome. Hoping it works! Loving your tales. As for Daniel and bed wetting – it will be when he is ready…. My ex, apparently, wet his bed until he was 9. Thankfully it was not inherited by our 3. J

Success! Am teaching my 10 year old niece to crochet tonight – hope it becomes a life long pleasure. I see the the NZ Woman's Weekly (was not that old) had a pattern for your crocheted rug. Selling tips?

Great! I'm so glad it works. So Chrome was not letting you comment? Strange. I really hope we don't have to wait until he's 9…..I wish I'd seen the Women's Weekly with that pattern. I'm guessing it's not the current edition? Thanks so much for all those great books btw. Kids love them.

Love being entertained by your posts. Keep those photos coming. They're lovely. Share your love of the cold (except getting out of bed in the morning). As for bed-wetters, I've read that they are often heavy sleepers (like Daniel). Cutting out fluids two hours before bed time might help. Love, B

9th July one. Will get it from Mum – scan and email. Not that you need a patter Rachel! They used old tshirts and made it as a bathmat. Am thinking of doing one for my bathroom. Also do you want older games? Or a paper making kit? Email me if you do.
